New Year’s (Un)resolutions

I have never been a fan of New Year’s, or the resolutions that accompany it. It has never made sense to me. To most people, New Year’s is a chance to take a closer look at one’s life, to closely examine it, and seek out to take a step to change it for the better. Others see it as a chance to finally do something they have been putting off.

This trend of thinking seems to envelope the world, and people start making resolutions. A week later, or maybe a month if you’re lucky, hardly anyone can keep any of these resolutions and soon enough they return to their old habits.

Call me cynical, but this cloud of resolutions that storm this world, is a depressing concept to the point of being laughable. Don’t get me wrong, kudos to the people who are able to keep these resolutions and are able to improve their lives, but for the most of us, it’s a smoggy atmosphere (no pun intended for the residents of China) that engulfs the world.

That being said, I was taking a look at my yearly expenses, which happens to coincide with the end of the year, go figure, and I found out that a great proportion of my expenses is going to fast food. For the most part, I hardly ever cook, and an easy and accessible solution is eating out. But I unconsciously made a resolution decided to eat less outside and consequently cook more.

Understand that my motives were purely motivated from an economic point of view rather than a health conscious move. Granted, I knew that by doing so will allow me to eat more healthy, but it was an added bonus not a key motive. I must admit that I was also getting tired of eating out and wanted a different variety of food.

I’m proud to say that for the past few weeks I did eat out less and in fact for all of last week, I hardly ate out at all. And I must admit that during that week, I noticed that I am starting to feel healthier, in the sense that my mood has been elevated. I also feel extra active than my normal self. And I must admit that experimenting with food is incredibly entertaining, and deeply self-rewarding. My motivation to eat in has switched from a financial perspective to a challenging yet healthy goal, and the extra cash can come in handy I presume.

Weather I completely stop eating out is very doubtful, I can’t part with the accessibility of fast food and the occasional laziness that dawns me. But I’m also considering different ways to store food in such a way that enables me to cook less yet eat more at home.

Let me know how often you eat out.

The End Where I begin…

Today, was the last day of college, that’s it, no more lectures, no more tests, no more.

As I walked around campus, going to the library, meeting a few friends, printing a few pages for the exams, chilling at the cafeteria, and walking into our last lecture, I couldn’t help but think this is the last time I will do any of this…..Technically last week was the last real college week, cause this week most of us didnt come most of the days. I didn’t want to go today, but I had to, I couldn’t miss my last day at college.

I don’t feel like writing, but I want to, it only makes sense considering I only write when I’ve got plenty to do not to mention that tomorrow would be the First Last Final Exam I will take.

That is it, the end of another stage of our life, what’s done is done, no going back, no repeating.

Can’t help but wonder what life has in store for me, can’t help but think what I plan to do afterwards…. So many options to choose from which it makes it only harder to choose.

Slow-motion Drama

Ever notice how in movies or shows, or video clips for that matter; when they get a slow motion scene, no matter how normal or simple it is, you can always turn into a dramatic scene.

Think about it, picture a group of kids jumping and playing all around the playground…now slow motion it, and maybe add some slow classical music to spice it up. Dramatic.

Now picture a person sitting at a table eating with his/her spoon. Now, slow motion it.

Just pay attention the next time they get a slow motion scene on tv.

Endings are never easy

I’ve been meaning to write this post since my finals last term, July 12 I think, and since I get inspired to write when I have loads of studying to do, I decided to finally post this.

Before summer vacation, Scrubs, one of my favorite shows, came to an end as we know it, with the new cast. After 8 years, shows like this become part of your life, especailly when you look back and find that it was part of your highschool and college years you realise its been a long time. But Scrubs isnt like other shows. It brings to us more than just a few laughs, they tend to have a point that it tries to come accross to you in each episode. Points, or lessons you may call it, that we encounter in our every day life.

With the Season Finale, JD,, one of the main characters who I very much relate to, was able to remind us, why we stay tuned througout these 8 years. It wasn’t a happy, special, nor dramtic as ending are usually are, in life and not movies. Which is exactly why I loved it. And in that episode, this the day where JD leaves the hospital, but to everyone else, it was just another day at work. No big deal except for JD. By the end of the show JD says something, that turns this to one of my favorite moments in Scrubs….

(Warning spoiler ahead!)

JD said:
"Things rarely go exactly the way you want them to, so sometimes you make due with whatever you can get… Endings are never easy; I always build them up so much in my head they can’t possibly live up to my expectations, and I just end up disappointed. I’m not even sure why it matters to me so much how things end here…

I guess it’s because we all want to believe that what we do is very important, that people hang onto our every word, that they care what we think. The truth is: you should consider yourself lucky if you even occasionally get to make someone, anyone, feel a little better. After that it’s all about the people that you let into your life.

And as my mind drifted to faces I’ve seen here before, I was taken to memories of family, of coworkers, of lost loves, even of those who’ve left us. And as I rounded that corner, they all came at me in a wave of shared experience And even though it felt warm and safe, I knew it had to end. It’s never good to live in the past too long.

As for the future, thanks to Dan, it didn’t seem so scary anymore. It could be whatever I wanted it to be.

And who’s to say this isn’t what happens? Who can tell me that my fantasies won’t come true… just this once?"

Let us come to a common word…to worship none except ALLAH

(Click on Image for a better view.)
*(42) And when the angels said to Mary: ‘Allah has chosen you and purified you. He has chosen you above all women of the worlds.
(43) Mary, be obedient to your Lord, prostrate and bow with those who bow.’
(45) When the angels said: ‘O Mary, Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word (Be) from Him, whose name is Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary. He shall be honored in this world and in the Everlasting Life – and he shall be among those who are close.
(46) He shall speak to people in his cradle and when he is aged, and shall be among the righteous.’
(47) ‘Lord,’ she said, ‘how can I bear a child when no human being has touched me?’ He replied: ‘Such is the Will of Allah. He creates whom He will. When He decrees a thing, He only says: "Be," and it is.
(48) He will teach him the Book, the Wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel,
(49) to be a Messenger to the Children of Israel, (saying): "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. From clay, I will create for you the likeness of a bird. I shall breathe into it and by the permission of Allah, it shall be a bird. I shall heal the blind, and the leper, and raise the dead to life by the permission of Allah. I shall tell you what you ate and what you store in your houses. Surely, that will be a sign for you, if you are believers.
(50) Likewise confirming the Torah that has been before me and to make lawful to you some of the things you have been forbidden. I bring you a sign from your Lord, therefore, fear Allah and obey me
(51) Allah is my Lord and your Lord, therefore, worship Him. This is the Straight Path".’
(59) Truly, the likeness of (Prophet) Jesus with Allah, is as the likeness of Adam, He created him from dust then He said to him "Be" and he was.
(60) The truth is from your Lord, therefore, do not be among the doubters.
(61) Those who dispute with you concerning him after the knowledge has come to you, say: ‘Come, let us gather our sons and your sons, our womenfolk and your womenfolk, ourselves and yourselves. Then let us humbly pray, so lay the curse of Allah upon the ones who lie.’
(62) This is indeed the truthful narration. There is no god except Allah. It is Allah who is the Almighty, the Wise.
(64) Say: ‘People of the Book, let us come to a common word between us and you that we will worship none except Allah, that we will associate none with Him, and that none of us take others for lords besides Allah.’ If they turn away, say: ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims.’
(65) People of the Book, why do you dispute about Abraham when both the Torah and the Gospel were not sent down till after him? Have you no sense?

How can an Idea turn into Million Dollars $?$?$?$

This person made a one-page site made up of 1 million pixels for sale, and sold at least 10 or more pixels to organisations/people, a dollar each. "cha ching"

If a visitor to the site hovers their mouse over any pixel they see the title chosen by the pixel’s owner, though large organisations bought larger areas in which to place their advertisements.

No professional skills was required for this, nothing, no web desiging knowledge was needed…just an idea, and a very simple one at that.

Laylet El-Qadr

Parables of the Qur’an

Episode Ninteen

Amr Khaled

A special episode about the Night of Determination (Lailatul-Qadr)

This is a special episode dedicated for the virtues of the Night of Determination and below is a brief description about the main points tackled in the episode.

I would like first to start with a special meaning of this Night.  It is known that Allah (SWT)[1] chooses and elects whomever He wishes.  Out of humanity, He chose Prophets; and out of Prophets, He selected the ones with willpower.  He also chose Musa (Moses) (AS)[2] and Maryam (Mary) (AS), who was told so by the Angels, in what can be translated as, “And  as the Angels said, ‘O Maryam, (Mary) surely Allah has elected you and purified you and has elected you over the women of the worlds […]”(TMQ, 3:42)[3].  And out of all the Prophets, He chose Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم).  (For, as

Muhammad (صلى الله  عليه وسلم) says, that he is the Master of humankind; and his name "Al-Moustafa "(  صلى الله عليه وسلم ) means “the elected one").  Out of the Angels, He (SWT) elected Jibril (Gabriel) (AS).  Out of all places, He chose ‘Arafa.  Out of the months, He (SWT) designated the month of Ramadan.  Out of the days, He chose the first ten days of Dhul-Hijja.  Out of all the nights of the year, He (SWT) chose the night of Lailatul-Qadr.

If you have been tardy these past days of Ramadan then it is time you got up and maybe you can make up for this tardiness by realizing the Night of Determination; the night that is better than 1000 months.

Why was it named so?

The first reason is that the word “Qadr “means a great eminence.  It was called so because of its high status.  It is an unusual Night.  Therefore, observe the Surah[4] in which Allah says what can be translated as “Surely We sent it down on the Night of Determination; And what makes you realize what the Night of Determination is?(TMQ, 97:1-2).  If you knew the reward of this Night and how much blessings Allah (SWT) would bestow upon you in it, you would have gathered your family; you would all stay up, pray together, and forgive each other.  Who is ready?  The Night is still long.

It was also called Lailatul-Qadr for another reason.  The second reason is that during this Night the fates and provisions of people are determined: either as happy or wretched.  It is true that everything has been determined since the beginning of eternity and written down in the Preserved Tablet, but it is said that during this Night the Angels are informed of the destinies (aqdar) of the worshippers for the following year.  It is a blessed Night.  So, everything will be decreed on this Night.  For example, it will be determined whether or not your family will be happy.  Would you like your family to be happy for the next year?  It is a night when fates are determined and it is a night of high standing.  That is why the Surah was called Surat al-Qadr.

There is a special Surah in the Qur’an for this Night.

What are the rewards of this night?

Four things

  1. It is a night better than 1000 months of worship.  Almost better than your whole life!
  2. It is a night when all your sins will be forgiven, according to the narrations of the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم )
  3. It is a night when all your supplications will be answered.  Allah will grant you anything you ask Him on that night, so be ready with all things that you want to ask Allah for.
  4. It is a night when you will be set free from hellfire.

When exactly is this night?

The prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم )forgot exactly which night it was in Ramadan.  First he thought it was among the first 10 nights so he spent them in seclusion, but Jibril told him that it was not among those nights.  Then, he thought it was among the mid 10 nights, but Jibril told him it was not among those nights.  So he spent the last 10 nights in seclusion and he maintained this habit till he died.

What did the prophet(صلى الله عليه وسلم ) used to do on the last 10 nights of Ramadan in anticipation for the Night of Determination?

  1. He used to stay up the whole night praying.
  2. He used to awaken his whole household on these nights.
  3. He practically rolled up his sleeves in anticipation.
  4. Charity!  Very special charity that was kept for this particular night.

So what will we do?

  1. We will do a special prayer called “tahajud”.  It is a midnight vigil prayer that extends for hours.
  2. We will supplicate and call Allah a lot on these nights.
  3. We can finish reading the whole Qur’an on the last 10 days of Ramadan.

Some ladies won’t be able to pray or read Qur’an because of their menses, what can they do?

Dhikr and dua’a (supplications and remembrance of Allah).  Don’t despair ladies, you can surpass everyone with your sincerity.  Dua’a is better than anything else on this night so you have no problem at all and no one can prevent you from calling Allah.

What can possibly keep you from realizing this night?

Things like:

1)      Being inattentive or distracted by other things.

2)      Having a short temper and fighting around with people.

Do you want to have a double-reward on that night?

Go take someone else’s hand and take him with you on these last 10 days.  Spread these few lines because they might wake someone up before these special days pass.

We will meet again tomorrow Insha’ Allah.  May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you all.

[1] Subhanahu wa Ta’ala [Glorified and Exalted Be He]

[2] Alayhe as-Salam [All Peace of Allah be upon him].

[3] TMQ=Translation of the Meaning of the Qur’an.  This translation is for the realized meaning, so far, of the stated (Surah:Ayah) of the Qur’an.  Reading the translated meaning of the Qur’an can never replace reading it in Arabic, the language in which it was revealed.

[4] A chapter; the Qur’an is comprised of 114 surahs

Ramadan Mubarak and Laylet el Qadr

FROM LAST YEARS POST:
"Kol Sana wento tayebeen, and I hope everone enjoys Ramadan this year, We all have a lot of improvements to do this year, I for one, wish that I do better. We should try to gain something beofre it passes, try to do more good this month, and try to continue doing it even after, try to take the full advantage of Ramadan, and like i said in a prevois post, for Ramdan last year, We should at least try to choose one or more things to imrpove and to continue doing it even after Ramadan.

More importantly, lets try and not miss "Laylet el Qadr", which means "The Night Of Qadr", which is greater then a thousand months, imagine that?

Lets do a little math to see how great this night is:

If everyone lives till they’re a 100 years old, this means, that you lived for (100 times 12) months

100 X 12 = 1,200 months

Meaning you only live a max of 1,200 months.

Meaning if you dont miss Laylet el Qadr, its as if you’ve lived 1000 months, and imagine if you dont miss it every year?

Can you begin to imagine the potentail…?

I hope everyone wont forget to pray Taraweeh and Tahjot this year, and at least read the Qurán once, thats advice for everyone and me of coarse… And lets all try to avoid the bad things we do and try to improve ourselves, so everyone will become better people.

Ramadan Kareem everyone…"

On another note, I think we’ve all had our share in bad sins this past year(s), so these nights (the last 10 nights of Ramadan) could be a very good chance to repent and try to make up for the things we’ve done.

There is also a special and famous Duaa'(Supplication) to repeat a lot for the night of Laylet el Qadr, which is "ALLAHuma enak 3afowon tooheb el3afwa fa3fo 3any",
"اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني ) .It would be better if you googled it, and searched for the meaning. But roughly, you are asking ALLAH with one of His names and attributes, saying that He loves Al-3afo, and you are asking for ALLAH’s 3afo.

Al-3afo (العفو), could be considered a higher degree then Al-Ghafr (الغفر),  Al-Ghafr, is to forgive a sin, but you still have commited it. In other words, it would be said, that you have commited a sin, but you have been forgiven.
On the other hand Al-3afo, you would be forgiven for a sin, but it would be considered you never even commited the sin; it would erase the fact that you have ever commited it, imagine that?

In other words, you have NEVER commited the sin!
How many of us wish for this kind of forgiveness, how many of us dread a sin that happend long long ago, that people know of or maybe no one even knows about it?

All of it could be erased like you never even done it.

Subhan ALLAH
I truley insist that whoever reads this, reads about this Duaa’ in the famous Hadith. And to make sure of what I am saying.

Regret or not

I’ve made a few wrong choices this summer, quiet a few.

But if I had to do it again, I’ll do most of it again in a heart beat.

Does that mean they weren’t really the wrong choices?
